freddie mercury at Wembley Park

The actual spray painted portrait is 12ft high. It breaks down to 3 panels for transport.

After loosing my studio space mid project I had to finish some paintings in a container. The show must go on!

The mural, on the Spanish Steps at Wembley Park, is an anamorphic portrait of Freddie Mercury flanked by two koi carp and a pair of symmetrical Virgo maidens. Compiled from 4 separate freehand spray painted pieces, the virgo maiden is mixed media comprised of digital drawing, real spray paint and photography. The central portrait stands 12ft tall.

The portrait is best viewed from 20m back from the bottom of the middle step at 1.7m from the ground. In fact it can look quite wrong when viewed from a different position.

“It was a great honour to be asked to celebrate Freddie Mercury in this way. I’ve gone back to basics with this one and used only one perspective point for the entire painting. There was so much to choose from, in regards illustrating Freddie’s interests, he was so full of life and had strong tastes, but the koi carp was an easy choice for me, their visual beauty and movement being something I could enjoy getting into. For the Virgo Maidens, they represent Freddie’s part of the Queen logo, and luckily I have the perfect muse right at home who happens to be a virgo too.”

To best photograph the piece yourself, stand 20m from the middle with your back against the lamppost. From this point the portrait lines up correctly.
