INTRODUCTION

はじめに

I'm Frank Styles, a spray paint artist based in Sunderland in the north east of England. イギリス北東部サンダーランドを拠点に活動する、スプレーペイント・アーティストのフランク・スタイルズ（Frank Styles）と申します。

I make giant anamorphic artworks on public staircases. 公共の大階段に、巨大なアナモルフィック・アートを制作しています。

Anamorphic means the image is drawn in a distorted way, so that it only resolves into a correct picture when you stand in one particular place. アナモルフィックとは、あえて歪ませて描くことで、ある一点に立ったときにだけ正しい絵として見える技法のことです。

From almost every angle, you see nothing but bands of colour stretched across the steps. ほとんどの角度からは、階段に伸びた色の帯にしか見えません。

Stand in exactly the right spot and a huge image snaps into focus. しかし、狙いどおりの場所に立った瞬間、巨大な絵が目の前に立ち上がります。

At Wembley Park in London I have painted the Spanish Steps, the main walking route between Wembley Stadium and OVO Arena Wembley. ロンドンのウェンブリー・パークでは、ウェンブリー・スタジアムとOVOアリーナ・ウェンブリーを結ぶ主要動線「スパニッシュ・ステップス」を手がけてきました。

In 2024 I made Auras, a portrait of Taylor Swift, to mark her stadium shows there. 2024年には、同スタジアムでのテイラー・スウィフト公演に合わせ、その肖像を描いた『Auras』を制作しました。

In 2026 I made I'm Mr Mercury, a 30ft tribute to Freddie Mercury for what would have been his 80th birthday. 2026年には、フレディ・マーキュリー生誕80年を記念し、高さ約9メートル（30フィート）の作品『I'm Mr Mercury』を制作しています。

I am now taking commissions in Japan. 現在、日本での制作のご依頼をお受けしています。

WHY STEPS

なぜ階段なのか

Space nobody is using. 使われていない空間が、目的地になります。

A staircase is usually just a way of getting from one place to another. 階段は通常、ある場所から別の場所へ移動するためだけの空間です。

It can instead be the thing people travel to see. その階段を、わざわざ見に来てもらう場所に変えることができます。

No scaffolding, no damage, no long closures. 足場も、建物への傷も、長期の閉鎖も必要ありません。

Every piece is hand painted with spray cans in my studio, then printed onto durable floor vinyl and fitted on site. 作品はすべてイギリスのスタジオでスプレー缶を用いて手描きし、耐久性のある床用シートに出力したうえで、現地に貼り付けます。

It goes down cleanly and it comes up cleanly. 施工も撤去も簡単で、跡が残りません。

Built for photographs. 写真に撮られることを前提に設計しています。

I mark the exact spot where the image resolves. 絵が正しく見える立ち位置を、現地にはっきりと示します。

People queue there, photograph it and post it, and the artwork travels far beyond the site. その一点に人が集まり、撮影し、SNSで共有することで、作品は会場の外へと広がっていきます。

Weeks, or years. 数週間から、数年間まで。

The same method works for a short campaign or for a permanent landmark. 短期のキャンペーンにも、恒久的なランドマークにも、同じ手法で対応できます。
